How To Select The Best Pomeranian Puppy From A Litter

You finally make the decision that you are ready to embark upon the noble journey of welcoming a dog into your home… You have come as far as deciding that a Pomeranian is the right dog for you. Now, the next thing to contend with is, how do you pick the best puppy out of the litter?

First things first, know that it is always best to go to a well-established and responsible breeder when it comes to acquiring your Pomeranian. Many people may not realize this, but most of the dogs that are sold in pet stores usually come from puppy mills. The trouble with puppy mill dogs is that they aren’t given the attention and care that they need for the very reason that those who run these puppy mills are more driven by profit rather than actually caring for their dogs. Hence, it is always better to go for a source that you know you can trust.

Once you select a good breeder, the next task is actually picking a pup out of the litter. Some of the usual things to look out for are unusual discharges coming from the eyes, ears, or anus of the puppy. Before anything else, you want to make sure that you are getting a healthy puppy. In addition, it may be a good idea to carefully examine the pup for any deformities or conditions. However, this isn’t to say that you should go by looks alone.

Another thing to consider is the pup’s behavior. At an early age, you can usually tell which Pomeranian pups are going to be active and which ones are going to be relatively calm. However, there aren’t any absolutes either. Judging a pup’s character is a tough balancing act. You can get a clue at an early age but you still have to leave room for any possible changes in the future.

The bottom line is that there is no single solution to finding the “best” Pomeranian puppy from a litter. There is no rulebook to refer to when it comes to selecting a pet because what you should be looking for is not the “best” per se, but the “right” one for you. Never be afraid to go for the underdog. Getting the “last pick” is not always a bad thing. Sometimes, these dogs are actually the ones in need the most, but eventually turn up to be as just as good as any other one in the litter.
